Good evening first grade families,
What a week at school! The week began with rain and the unmistakable feeling that Christmas is round the corner. I hope your Diwali holidays were as relaxing as mine was. Students came back into school reading to share their holiday stories with us.
We had a great week with lots of learning and laughter. We learned new spelling strategies, our unit on Plants have begun in full-swing and we look forward to planting tomatoes and beans this week as our class plants.
In Language Arts we have been introduced to our Unit on Poetry and have already read 2 poems- one about a Train and another about a Wobbly Tooth. We are learning how to rhyme and we are exploring poems with rhythms. We will be trying our hand at writing short poems ourselves wth rhymes and rhythms.
Some of the things we learned this week- on our I CAN section, so we can reflect on what we have learned at the end of the day. It is amazing how so many students remember and can reflect and can apply what they have learned to different areas of their learning. Well done, Grade 1A!
For our Unit on Plants, we have discovered that Plants need similar things to survive as we do. We had lots of fun discovering through "chit chatting" and sharing points of views and ideas what plants need and what human begins need to survive. We are looking forward to taking care of our plants and watching them grow (fingers crossed). While we are learning about plants we also discovered that in Bug Club there was a very very cool book about plants in particular plants that are traps. We had a lot of fun listening to it and asking very good questions- imagine plants trap insects and eat them! That was a great surprise to us all.
We had our reading comprehension component of English this week, where we had to read books we have read and see if we have understood them. Some of us had to pretend to be teachers- read our books and write down questions to ask the teacher. Some of us had to think about the Beginning, Middle and End of the story and what characters we liked in the story.
In Social Studies, we are learning and continue to think, discuss and draw plans of our school and how to pretend to be birds and see our school. We have used google maps to look at our school and can even see where our classroom is. We are drawing different parts of our school. This week, we look at maps and learn how to read a map,we will be looking for treasure at the end of the week! Treasure hunt on its way!
