What a week!

Good evening and happy weekend,

We have had a busy week in Grade 1A.

Highlights of the week-

• Our first swimming lesson for the year and had lots of fun! Perfect weather for a dip in the pool. 
• Our First house meeting on Tuesday to select our house captains and co-captians for the year.
• Our student council election speech assembly for this year
• First Buddy reading with the Pre-K class (we are going to make books together with the Pre-K class on shapes and animals) 
• Our first popcorn treat from Ms. Sam for being such an awesome class, following classroom expectations and being the best class any teacher could ask for :-) 

This week, we learned a lot of things and reviewed lots of what we had learned earlier. 

In Language Arts, we reviewed our vowel sounds, worked on defining with a sentence is, discussed the need for sentences to make complete sense and the conventions we use to show that our sentences are indeed sentences. Phew! that is definitely a run on sentence. We played sentence games and enjoyed it. We had our first readers workshop and worked at three reading centres this week.

We had our first week of SHOW AND SHARE and it was brilliant- students are beginning to ask interesting questions (look out for a letter this week about our special show and share for the following week) 

In Maths, we are getting better and better at the five minute mental maths and have lots of fun working on maths. We learned the word "compare" and have been comparing different numbers- we even listened to the song about the number eating alligator "...who loved big numbers better than pizza and mash potatoes..." We reviewed our basic numeration skills - addition and subtraction and learned vocabulary words that mean the same thing as addition and subtraction.

We have had a great time being scientists and discovering that we can classify (another new word) or put into groups animals. We are working on this together through this week and will have a huge big display of our work next week. We know the differences between mammals, amphibians, birds, fish and reptiles and have also discovered that penguins are birds and not fish! 

In social studies, we are learning how to draw maps of our classrooms- I will be sending out a letter this week about our special show and share- that has to do with maps. We have been studying maps- maps of our classroom and different rooms! 

With all this learning, students in Grade 1A have done a super job. We are getting into the routine of grade 1A and are learning how to make new friends, share and respect each other.
